If you have children, you know you can expect them to catch a cold at least three times during the winter months.  And you also know that taking them to the doctor for a cold usually results in money spent and the doc telling you that there is nothing that can be done for a cold virus.  Here are a few tips that I have tried with my own kids, maybe they will work for you too.

To ward off potential sicknesses, especially colds, I start my kids on vitamin C about two weeks before school starts in the fall.  This has proven to be helpful, as our first cold in the family, didn’t occur until mid-January.  Once the children do turn up with the first symptoms of a cold, let them sleep!  In order to get well faster, they need the rest.  Another common sense thing to do is start increasing clear fluids.  Hot tea with lemon and honey several times a day along with all types of juices will keep them from getting dehydrated and is full of vitamins also.  When they are sick, they usually don’t have an appetite, but if you can, get them to eat oatmeal, applesauce, chicken soup, and jello, these are all good.  Stay away from milk products and carbonated drinks during these few days.

Other than those few things, just keep them warm and dry is my last recommendation.  Of course, if they do not get well, or the symptoms get worse, you should make an appointment to see your family doctor.
